After routine knee replacement surgery, Bob suffered an unexpected debilitating infection, followed by two unsuccessful emergency surgeries. He was rushed to OrthoCarolina’s Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) Clinic in hopes of saving his leg.

While periprosthetic joint infections are rare in total joint replacements, with less than 1 percent of patients developing an infection, they are serious. At OrthoCarolina’s Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) Clinic, Drs. Brian Curtain, Keith Fehring, Thomas Fehring, Jesse Otero and Bryan Springer help patients who are facing these serious infections and even possible amputations.

Thanks to the team at the PJI Center and their commitment to innovation, Bob not only kept his infected leg, but has two legs that allow him to get back to activities he loves.

More work remains to find out why serious infection occur and how best to treat the patient not only to save their life, but give them the best quality of life possible. Support for PJI research gives patients hope of a robust life.
