Registration is now open to high school students interested in exploring a career in medicine.

OrthoCarolina and OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI) host an Explorers program every year for high schoolers. Exploring is a co-ed program run by the Boy Scouts of America that is designed to help students in grades 9-12 explore their career interests. Through the program, students will have an opportunity to meet, talk, and work with physical therapists, athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, and research staff via Zoom meetings.

Who is this program for?

This program is for any high school student who wants to learn more about the fields of sports medicine, orthopedics, athletic training and/or physical therapy.

This program has been held in person at an OrthoCarolina clinic in the past and seats have been limited due to space restrictions. This year, we are excited to be able to have significantly more room for attendees as we move the program to Zoom.

What if I’m interested in a medical career outside of orthopedics?

While this program is presented by an orthopedic practice, we believe students interested in any medical field will find the program informative. Medical professionals will give insight into their career path and opportunities available in healthcare. Students will also get to hear from medical school students about medical school requirements and how they can start preparing for a future career.

Being involved with this program is something that high school students can put on their college applications as well, showing their early interest in career goals.

When does this program take place?

OrthoCarolina/OCRI Exploring Post meets once a month (2nd Thursday in most cases) during the school year from 6:30-7:30pm starting Thursday, October 8.

Where is this program being held?

Zoom! We’re taking the program virtual this year, so you can enjoy this same program from the comfort of your own home.

What should my student expect from this program?

The meeting format will be an hour long interactive presentation by an OrthoCarolina medical provider via Zoom.

Will this Explorers post ever meet in person this school year?

OrthoCarolina and OCRI teams are exploring options to be able to hold some of these meetings in person. In the past, this program has featured interactive activities for students to learn more about careers in the medical field. It is our hope that will be able to return to that level of activity during the 2020-2021 school year.

How much does this program cost for the school year?

If you decide to join the OrthoCarolina/OCRI Exploring post, the annual enrollment fee for Exploring is $60. That fee is collected by the Boy Scouts of America organization and goes toward their administrative costs associated with the Explorers program.

There are many other Explorers programs to choose from in the Charlotte area and the one-time $60 registration fee covers any other posts you’d like to join as well.
