Happy National Nonprofit Day to you and the incredible organizations making this world a better place!

The OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI) is doing our part to make lives better by finding groundbreaking treatments and relief for half of Americans living with painful orthopedic conditions.

Did you know musculoskeletal conditions are the #1 cause of disability in the US?

We know these conditions can be debilitating and interfere with simple daily activities like walking, getting dressed, climbing stairs, and preparing meals. Plus, the total annual healthcare and societal costs of such widespread disability has reached $980 billion and rising rapidly as our country’s population ages.

Those figures are staggering, but all hope is not lost. Everyday, OCRI challenges the status quo to advance orthopedic medicine in a way that leads to better medical care, better outcomes, and better cost efficiency.

In fact, patients like Diane find hope in the innovative care forged by our research. Diane chose OrthoCarolina when faced with diagnosis that led to a quadruple amputation because of the research and innovation OCRI cultivates.

Diane was one of our first patients to benefit and contribute to our Virtual Reality (VR) research in amputation patients. Based on an overwhelming response from amputee patients, VR seems to help relieve their phantom limb pain while patients wear the headsets for fun. Because of these observations, OCRI and VR programming experts are currently putting therapeutic uses of virtual reality in amputee and brachial plexus populations to the test. It’s our hope, and theory, that leveraging VR will help relieve their pain to the point where patients can reduce their need for strong pain management prescriptions.

If there’s a better way, we will find it. And when we find it, we share it.

The orthopedic treatments and procedures of today will not be the same as those tomorrow. With almost 300 active studies underway, our priority is and will always be to meet the growing need for better orthopedic care through research, innovation, and education.

By sharing our findings with the world through articles and presentations, we impact patients like Diane and millions of others living with debilitating musculoskeletal conditions.
