OrthoCarolina Research Institute leaders Dr. Brian Curtin and Christi Cadd share how study innovations are leading to groundbreaking patient care

In this episode of Charlotte Business Journal’s “The Pursuit of Exceptional Care” podcast, Dr. Brian Curtin, Hip & Knee Center surgeon and chair of OCRI’s Research Advisory Committee joins Christi Cadd, executive director of OCRI to discuss how research improves patient care.

Through their partnership, OrthoCarolina and OCRI integrate research into orthopedic clinics leading to patient-inspired, cutting-edge research studies. That model is reshaping patient care and advancing orthopedic practices in the Carolinas and beyond.

The future of orthopedic medicine is taking shape with every OrthoCarolina patient visit, procedure, and test in a biomechanics lab.

Dr. Curtin explains how patient visits matter at OrthoCarolina’s Hip and Knee Center, “We’re a tertiary care referral center, so all the toughest problems get shipped to us.”

“Trying to solve those problems leads us to ask questions like, ‘Is there research or a study that we can design to get an answer for this?’ The next time that patient comes in or the next patient down the line, we want to have a better answer.”

The orthopedic treatments and procedures of today will not be the same as those tomorrow. OCRI’s priority is to meet the growing need for better orthopedic care through research, innovation, and education.

“Every procedure and everything we do today is because someone paved the way through research before us.” Cadd told the Charlotte Business Journal. “So, it’s exciting to be part of that movement-knowing the things we’re doing today are changing the way patients are treated in the future.”

Research Inspired by Patients

One particular research study that exemplifies this philosophy is the Carolinas Opioid Reduction Effort (CORE) Study.

The CORE Study’s goal is to reduce the use of opioids in the Carolinas and beyond. By educating patients and healthcare professionals about our research-backed opioid-free surgery method, we are preventing narcotics from entering homes and lowering the risk of opioid addiction.

The OCRI Team embarked on this endeavor in 2017. Since then, OCRI found opioid-free surgery to be safe and effective for managing pain during and after some orthopedic procedures.
