Thirty previous fellows from around the world gathered in San Francisco, CA to celebrate the career of a beloved mentor, Dr. Michael Coughlin. Dr. Coughlin is a Foot and Ankle surgeon out of Boise, Idaho whose influence reaches across oceans.

OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program Director and Foot and Ankle surgeon, Dr. Carroll Jones was one of Dr. Coughlin’s former fellows and organized and chaired the weekend conference in Dr. Coughlin’s honor. An array of topics were discussed during the event ranging from arthritis to treating trauma patients in the Canadian wilderness.
“Being part of a fellowship is about far more than just the immediate learning experience,” Dr. Jones said. “The bonds that are formed between colleagues and mentors last a lifetime. The celebration of Dr. Coughlin’s career afforded us the opportunity to catch up with old friends, exchange ideas, and discuss future research projects.”
It’s thanks to countless skilled teachers like Dr. Coughlin that OrthoCarolina continues in a legacy of educating young physicians through six subspecialty fellowship programs and hosts a total of 17 fellows annually.
